Dental Implants

An implant is a titanium “root” which can be placed into the jawbone, and once integrated with the bone, can be used to support a crown, a bridge, or secure a complete denture. Dental implants may be used to eliminate partial plates and dentures.

Implants have been used successfully for almost 50 years, and have a very high success rate. They look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth, and are becoming the standard of care for replacing missing teeth.

Implant Placement

There are two phases to implant dentistry:

1. Using highly accurate surgical techniques, an incision is made in the gum tissue, and the implant is placed into the jawbone in a dimensionally-controlled site (depth and width).

After the gum tissue is opened, the jawbone is tapped with a small drill, and then drilled with a wider drill, and the titanium implant base is inserted into place, to resemble the tooth root. The gum tissues are then closed to allow for the healing to begin. This may take anywhere from 3-6 months to ensure a strong base.

The metal titanium is used in the manufacture of dental implants due to its inertness (does not react) and biocompatibility (not harmful or toxic to living tissue).

2. An abutment is secured to the top of the implant, and custom-fabricated crowns are placed over the abutments, functioning like real teeth.

Dental implants can replace a single tooth or multiple teeth, which may have been extracted, missing or lost.

Full arch implants can also be manufactured. These are dental implants that can be placed to accept a full arch of teeth, which is removable, yet functions like a full set of normal teeth.
